Marci's Story

Marci.JPG

My name is Marci Tatham. I am 26 years old and live in Irvine, CA. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 2012 during my first semester of graduate school. Instead of dwelling on the negative aspects of Type 1 Diabetes, I've learned to channel my focus on the positives. Through my journey, I've gained a new sense of strength and it has added more purpose to my life. As a Global Ambassador for Beyond Type 1, I enjoy raising awareness, educating, and defying stereotypes commonly associated with people living with Type 1 Diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes can be rather tricky on most days, but I've learned to find balance through living a healthy lifestyle, enjoying real foods, and incorporating regular fitness into my everyday (Along with the help of my Dexcom CGM and T:Slim insulin pump. I'm so thankful for access to these devices). However, the most helpful part of my journey is the amazing support system that I have. I am one of four T1D's in the family--my dad, brother, and younger sister all share this disease. There's never a shortage of insulin or test strips in our household and we all secretly compete to get the lowest A1C. My husband, Matt, is also my #1 supporter and has been by my side since the beginning and continues to share in a lifestyle that makes living with T1D not so bad.

Lastly, T1D has presented me with challenges that I've been determined to crush. My latest challenge is running the NYC Marathon (my 1st marathon) this November. When I was diagnosed, I thought my disease would prevent me from doing stuff like running 26.2 miles. Each day that I train, I am reminded that I am capable of overcoming. Type 1 Diabetes is not a hindrance to living the best life possible!
